Visit Aix-en-Provence

Aix-En-Provence, or more commonly just Aix, is located near Marseilles and is just a breath away from the Mediterranean Sea. It’s famously known for a battle that occurred there during Roman times when the women who were captured by the Romans committed suicide rather than become prisoners. In Roman lore, the actions at the springs of Aix were considered highly heroic. Today’s Aix, however, is more known for the many fountains that exist within the city. Are you planning a visit to Aix-En-Provence soon? Here are some of the sights that we recommend while visiting this beautiful gem of Southern France!

If You’re In Aix, Then Why Not See the Fountains?

If Aix is known as the “City of a Thousand Fountains,” then taking the time to explore some of them can be a tremendous amount of fun. Grab a bite to eat or drink at the local cafe and then slowly meander through the streets of Aix, taking in the Old World atmosphere of this city. You’ll find three fountains of notable interest during your wanderings as you make it to Cours Mirabeau, but make sure you take some time to visit the Fontaine des Quatre Dauphins during your visit – it’s a 17th century masterpiece.

When you’re down at the Cours Mirabeau, you’ll notice plenty of small spots to enjoy something wonderful. If you’re hungry, we highly recommend Les Deux Garçons for a sit-down meal underneath its green canopy. You get a wide view of the street itself, but don’t be fooled by the slow pace of life here. It’s an outdoor cafe, which means keep your items close.

For Architectural Wonders, Make Your Way To the Hôtel de Ville

For an even better experience in Aix, you might consider staying at the Hôtel de Ville for your stay to enjoy the many tapestries and classic 17th century architectural styling that this masterpiece has to offer. The clock tower that stretches up to the sky next to it was originally built in 1510 and you’ll also get to enjoy the ornateness of the Corn Exchange, which was active in the 18th century.

The fun doesn’t stop there, however, as the famed thermal springs that gave Aix-En-Provence its name is close by as well. The spa near the springs was built in 1705 near the ruins of the ancient Roman baths of Sexitus and the waters here contain high levels of limestone and carbonic acid. You can then head out at the end of a relaxing day to the Aix Cathedral, or the Cathedral of the Holy Saviour, to enjoy the wide array of tapestries. The Cathedral is quite unique as many architectural styles are blended into the building, dating back to the 5th Century.

Are you planning a visit to Aix-En-Provence in the near future? It’s blend of traditional charm and modern ease make it the perfect place to enjoy some time away from the rest of the world. Just don’t plan on moving quickly during your visit, for if you do, you’ll miss the beauty of this place that so many have called home.
