As the largest settlement on Corsica, Ajaccio offers a few advantages that the other cities on this island in the Mediterranean just aren’t able to offer. It starts with the market, where fresh local produce is put up for sale. Ajaccio is also the birthplace of Napoleon, so it only stands to figure that there would be several monuments dedicated to him throughout the city. The imperial chapel even houses the graves of Napoleon’s parents and siblings, while the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta remembers him because that’s where he was baptized. You don’t have to be a big fan of Napoleon, however, to enjoy all that Ajaccio has to offer. If you’re planning on a visit to Corsica and intend on staying in Ajaccio, then here are a few other options for you to consider.
The Fesch Museum Holds a Number of Masterpieces
When it comes to fine arts on Corsica, nothing is better than the Fesch Museum in Ajaccio. You won’t get away from the Napoleon connection with a visit here because it was established by his uncle, the Cardinal Joseph Fesch. There are several Italian Renaissance paintings on display in this museum and is well worth the price of admission.
To take a look at the history of Corsica, we recommend making a stop at the Bandera Museum as it looks at the Mediterranean influences that can be found on the island. For those who love literary finds, the municipal library on the island holds a number of books that were printed in the 15th and 16th centuries. And then, of course, a visit to Ajaccio usually makes time for a stop at the Bonaparte House before heading out to explore the Genoese roots on the island.
The Geneoes Towers Provide Magnificent Views
There are three Genoese towers to find when you take a trip out to Corsica. Although the towers themselves would likely be considered unimpressive by the average visitor, these historical monuments of France are stationed in such a way that they could reinforce the defensive perimeter of the island when it was loyal to Genoa. That means the views of the sea from these tower locations is absolutely stunning at any time of day. The easiest to access is the Torra di a Parata.
For a more traditional good time, Ajaccio also has two marinas that will let you relax out by the water or go for a short hike if you prefer. There’s also a casino to enjoy within the community and the city center is filled with clubs, bars, and cinemas if you’re looking for something to fill time out in the evening.
Ajaccio is a beautiful community that benefits from a truly extraordinary location on Corsica. Any time of the year is a good time to visit, although the winter season tends to see more foreigners head in this direction. If you’re planning on a visit to Corsica in the near future, then be sure to add these ideas to your agenda and you’ll be certain to have a great time!
