Located in the Rhone Alpes region of southeastern France, this community has been the capital of Savoy since the 13th century. This history draws many to explore the community, especially with the historical mysteries of the castle built by the Dukes of Savoy, but so do the mountains and the opportunities to explore nature on a personal basis. No matter what your purpose is for exploring Chambery, there are a number of fantastic hidden gems that you’ll find in this community. Let’s take a look at what your trip might look like!
The Elephants Fountain Always Deserves a Stop
So what if it’s the most famous landmark within the city? It’s famous because it is incredible and because it’s incredible, it deserves a visit! This fountain was built in 1838 to honor the feats of Benoit de Boigne down in India. The sculptures on the fountain are quite striking because they look incredibly realistic and like any good sculpture, it was initially mocked.
The Ville Ancienne should be the next stop on your agenda because it is one of the best preserved little medieval towns in all of France. There are a number of stunning hidden courtyards, tall shuttered townhomes, and lots of little squares that are crammed full of equally little cafes that all offer a tempting treat in some form. A day meandering here is well worth the time!
For a quick view of what 18th century life was like in Chambery, a stroll through Les Charmettes will provide you with everything that you need. Take some time to enjoy the fully landscaped gardens that fill with the scents of herbs and flowers during the summer. Jacques Rousseau called this his home for about 6 years, so there’s a historical connection here too
The Museums of Chambery? Vacant but Spectacular
For many tourists, Chambery is too far off the beaten path for a quality visit. Their loss is absolutely your gain because there are two fine museums that will be virtually vacant for you to enjoy. The first is the Museum of Fine Arts, which was recent rehabilitated and features Renaissance paintings primarily in its permanent collection. There’s a small entry fee for the temporary exhibits that rotate through, however, so be prepared in case you wish to meander.
The other museum is the Savoisien, which is in a Franciscan monastery and is actually still linked to the cathedral. The archaeological finds that have occurred through Chambery are housed here and one of the best rooms here has a collection of 13th century wall paintings. It also recently just re-opened after an extensive renovation and is ready for a long visit.
Chambery is a beautiful city that offers people a chance to enjoy nature by the lake, a stroll through a museum, or a relaxing time in a private garden. Enjoy all three experiences along with your own plans and this community will offer you the perfect way to relax for your upcoming visit!
