When the city of Nimes is brought up in conversation, you’re invariably talking about one of two subjects: denim or Rome. Some of the most extensive Roman ruins in all of Europe are located in Nimes. Denim, which was exported to America, was also first created in this city. Today, however, Nimes is looking toward the future as it focuses on recruiting high tech industries to compliment the textile and Roman traditions that have graced this city that was 60,000 strong during the Roman Empire. Are you planning a visit to Nimes? If so, then the extensive and well-preserved Roman ruins are likely one of the primary reasons for your visit – along with the chance to sit along the Mediterranean Sea! Let’s take a look at some options available to you.
The Roman Amphitheater Is the Best in France
The elliptical Roman Amphitheater is not only one of the best in France, but it is one of the best preserved icons of the Roman Empire in all the world. At one point it was used for housing as the walls served as ramparts, but the housing units were cleared out by Napoleon. Today the amphitheater is used as a concert venue and for bullfighting events. Even if there isn’t something scheduled, going down to take a look at this 2nd century masterpiece is worth the effort!
Going back even further in time, there is a temple that is dedicated to the sons of Agrippa that is in Nimes as well. Known as the “Square House,” it was built in 19 BC and is one of the best preserved Roman temples anywhere in the world. If you stroll inside this small temple, you’ll be treated to a video about the history of the city.
The Pont du Gard, which was also built by Agrippa, is an aqueduct that was used to supply the drinking water to the city. It is also incredibly well preserved and provides a stunning backdrop to the views that you’ll see from the south bank.
The Fountain Gardens? Simply Spectacular!
The gardens in Nimes are quite large and there is a stream that flows out of this green space. You can often see swans and ducks paddling in the water, which makes it a nice walking opportunity, especially at sunset. Most of the time, the gardens are used as a transition point between the Temple of Diana and the Tour Magne, which gives extra value to the trip. When the city decided to make it a public park and renovate it, they kept the Roman artifacts that were here in the original gardens intact, giving the space a truly unique character.
