Visit Perpignan

Perpignan is a city that dates back to Roman times, but the modern city was founded around the 10th century. It’s located near the very south of mainland France, right along the shore of the Mediterranean Sea in the isthmus area between it and the Atlantic Ocean. It’s also very near the border of Spain, and because of its location, you’ll see both Mediterranean and Spanish influences just about everywhere you go in this city. Are you planning a visit to Perpignan in the near future? If you are, then we’ve put together a few ideas for you to consider adding to your own during your stay in this beautiful city in Southern France.

Is Perpignan Truly the Center of the Universe?

Dali used to come to Perpignan because he considered it one of the best places to generate ideas for his artwork. He once declared that the train station in this city was the “center of the universe” because all of his best ideas came to him while he was sitting there! Although Perpignan isn’t the biggest city you might choose to visit, the historical significance that runs through the streets goes beyond the name signs that are in both French and Catalan.

The best example of this is the Chateau de Salses. It’s almost ironic that the Chateau is such an engaging place to visit considering it was never engaged by the enemy forces that it was built to defend against. The views from the higher walls are better than spectacular and there are a few surprises within the Chateau itself that we don’t want to spoil for you here. It’s a short day trip, but worth the effort to explore the site.

How About a Unique Festival to Enjoy?

Some cultures forbid the use of photography because they believe the picture will cut away a piece of a person’s soul or carry it away forever. In Perpignan every year, there is a photojournalism festival that brings together some of the year’s best examples of photography for the general public to see. The photographers are on hand to discuss their work, which is often very powerful and thought provoking. The exhibitions are free, but held throughout different venues in the city center. There are also discussion panels that are often free to the public.

Perpignan is also the home to the Guitares au Palais festival every year on the last weekend of August. It’s based on acoustic guitar traditions, but there’s also a heavy alternative music influence and some pop related music as well. The festival is held at the Palace of the Kings of Majorca, a site that is worthy of a visit all on its own if you happen to be exploring the city.
