Visit Strasbourg

Located near the border of Germany, Strasbourg immediately comes to the minds of many because it is in many ways the seat of the European Union.

A number of political institutions have a presence within this city, including the European Parliament, the Ombudsman for the EU, and the Council of Europe. There’s a good chance you don’t want to visit this city to participate in European politics, however, so rest assured – there are plenty of ways to unwind as you explore the historical city center and everything this city has to offer. Let’s take a look!

Experience the Performance of the Cathedral Clock

The fact that the city center of Strasbourg was the first UNESCO World Heritage site for an entire center in 1988 says something of it. It’s one thing to look at pictures of the city center online or examine the intricacy of the architecture as you stare at your computer. It’s another experience altogether to look up at this medieval buildings that are towering over you!

One of the best wonders of this Middle Ages is the cathedral clock. It has a daily performance at 12:30pm that you won’t want to miss on your visit here. There are also plenty of ancient cobble streets to explore, waterside homes to marvel at, and squares to enjoy. Just gaze at the details of this space and you’ll love it! If you can make it to Strasbourg for Christmas, one of the oldest and best markets in the entire world is held here in the city center for the month of December.

You Could Spend a Day Just Look At Strasbourg’s Bridges!

With 20 bridges connecting the city together, many of the dating back to the 17th century, the history of the city is very much on display in big and small ways alike. The Ponts Couverts is one of the most beautiful in the world and a classic example of a covered medieval bridge. It’s framed by 13th century towers and is wonderful to explore on a sunny afternoon. You can also walk over to Germany using the Passerelle, which allows only pedestrian and bike traffic across the border.

If you’re tired of being on foot, a water tour of the bridges of Strasbourg is a great way to spend an afternoon as well. You can get a water view of the Ponts Couverts with the cathedral in the background providing the perfect photographer opportunity. From there you can choose which museums to explore because they’re all separated by style and genre in the city so you don’t have to wander through lots of museums to see your favorite pieces of art. They’re all congregated into one easily accessible museum and include everything from Renaissance art to Ancient Eastern art.
